The Burning Question: Compliments

*Fanfare* Question of the Week has returned! For those of you that haven’t been around on Do Not Refreeze for a long time, at the beginning of this year I used to have a weekly feature where we’d all get chatting about burning beauty issues. Some of my favourites included Overhyped Releases and False Nails, I loved the interaction of those posts and hope to resurrect it now, but under a new moniker! I doubt I’d be consistent enough to keep it weekly, so this will do. Let’s go…

When was the last time someone complimented you?

The video above is 90 seconds of real feel-good footage! QVC Beauty have teamed up with comedian and ‘international charmer’ Brian Lacey to dish out over 100,000 compliments to ladies in the next couple of weeks and be the cause of 100,000 smiles. Dawww! Shockingly, research commissioned by QVC Beauty showed that 41% of women have not received a single compliment in the last year! After hearing that statistic, it comes as no surprise to learn that a measly 25% of men even think about dishing out compliments to the ladies in their lives. I’m lucky that my Colin is in that 25%! Of course Brian Lacey’s compliments are cheesier than an Abba tribute band, but it got me thinking about compliments.

Being a waitress, I have to be friendly and chatty. It goes with the job, really, but I’ve always been the sort of person who smiles and says ‘good morning’ to strangers when you cross paths. Perhaps I wouldn’t be if I was raised in the city, but where I live I only ever pass a handful of people on my 2 mile walk to work of a morning! Haha. I’m often stopping people on the train/on the street/in the cafe to say ‘I love your top/bag/earrings/lipstick! Where did you get it?’. I like to raise a smile, because I know that REALLY brightens up my day if someone asks me something like that. There’s absolutely no reason why we can’t all spread some good feelings and maybe reap some good karma in return! It’s not all about strangers, though, don’t neglect your ladies at home! Your mum, your sister, your nan, your best mate. I’m always telling my mum how foxy she looks since dropping 2 stone!

So, tell me. Does your man compliment you, does he tell you you’re beautiful every day? What’s the best compliment you’ve ever received? Do you compliment others?

I hope you enjoy the return of Question of the Week. You are beautiful, by the way. :)

  1. I love that they’re doing this. It’s such a nice gesture and so selfless :) It’s a great idea.

My Shaun has his moments, he compliments a few times a week at least, always :) Not every day.. but then I probably don’t compliment him everyday so it’s a 2 way street really.

I’m glad to see the return of the question posts! :) Always loved these xx

  2. Ooh, I love this idea! My boyfriend’s great with the compliments, but he also loves taking the mickey out of me (jokingly, of course) so the two cancel each other out!

I do give out compliments when I’m at work, usually envying people’s nails or purses, because I know how much it brightens my day when someone says something nice to me!

  3. Aha, perfect example happened yesterday. I was going out to a party with the boy and before we left my Dad said – ‘You look lovely – I’ll tell you, even if he doesn’t.’ To which the boy said, ‘She does, she always does, but she knows that.’ -_-

Random people always compliment my eyebrows – I think they get mentioned a few times a week. I do compliment people when I mean it – I’m always telling my mum she doesn’t need to lose more weight, she looks great as she is. Other than that, it’s usually hair envy since mine is a permanent mess haha :]

  4. My man is quite thin on the ground with compliments, but it makes them oh so much more special when he does say them, the best being you look beautiful just randomly a while back.

I love it when strangers compliment me, but I never do it because I can never muster up the courage. I smile at people though, sounds a bit weird but if you smile at a specific person (without being creepy!) it really brightens there day, I know this from being on the receiving end of a deliberate smile at me, I can picture the scene exactly even now!

  5. My boyfriend always compliments me, and what is nice is he doesn’t just say ‘you look gorgeous’ or ‘you look beautiful’ he will be specific and say something like ‘your eyes look amazing today, have you done anything different’ and most of the time he notices when I change something about my appearance (not always – he is a man after all!) but I love how he does notice little things. :)

  6. Lovely post hun! The Chap is really good with compliments and I’m like you, I always tell a girl if I like her hair or dress etc. I was in Accessorize last week and the shop assistant had the most gorgeous eye makeup so I told her how fab I thought it was and she told me all the products she used! She should have a Beauty Blog if she doesn’t already! xxx

  7. @Stacey: Yeah, mine says I look better without makeup on too – although I don’t think he means it, I think he just says it to try and stop me spending so long getting ready! Hahaha.

@Lily: Daww, my dad’s not like that at all haha. And you DO have fab eyebrows!

@Phoebe: I love it when it’s random! I used to be really shy complimenting strangers too but this one time I just NEEDED to know where this woman got her boots else I wouldn’t be able to live. Hahaha.

@Jess: Haha mine’s a bit different, he’ll notice little things, like he’ll say ‘your eyeliner looks really good today, is that the Illamasqua one?’ (He’s pretty savvy about my collestion!), but he said he hadn’t really noticed when I told him I’d lost a stone!

@May: Wow, no one ever gives me that much detail! I asked the girl who served me in New Look today what nail polish she was wearing and she was like ‘oh it’s a Rimmel one I think’ so I asked if she knew the name and she was like ‘nah’ – no one EVER seems to know when I ask! Do these people not pay attention ;P

  8. My guy does compliment me every day, in some way or another. He speaks very highly of me not only just when he compliments, but when he speaks to others. Maybe someday the way I feel about myself will fall into step with the way that he feels about me. ;)

I’m big on giving compliments as well. If I like something, I will almost always say it. I enjoy complimenting strangers, because I enjoy when someone I don’t know is willing to step outside of their comfort zone to dote on me a little. I like to think that it can make someone’s day. Many people don’t feel special or interesting. Maybe when someone out the blue points out something outstanding about them, it makes them feel more like the special person they really are. :)

  9. G tells me I’m beautiful everyday. He also takes the time to specifically compliment an aspect of my look- my hair or my dress or my nails.

The two nicest things someone has ever said have been comparing me to Molly Ringwold in Pretty in Pink-because I love that film and I love her style in it and once a lady stopped me to compliment me on my dress- she said she saw me every day and I always looked amazing and she’d never had the guts to approach me. I thought that was such a kind thing to do and really made my day.

  10. My boyfriend is kinda rubbish with the compliments! He just isn’t that kind of person I guess, but I know how he feels about me. I’d like some compliments now and then though!

Recently i’ve been getting alot of compliments about my deer jumper, ha! I got it in New Look last year, and now its winter again, the bad boy is back!

I think we all love compliments, and I try to give them out as much as I can! When on placement as a nurse, I always try to increase my patients morale. Get me, Florence Nightingale over here!
